We have a skylight directly above where our projector screen used to be, which caused constant lighting and visibility issues. Those problems are now completely gone. The Challenge: Visibility Problems Under Natural Light
Zion Lutheran Church in Buffalo faced a common but frustrating challenge that many worship spaces encounter: their existing projector screens were nearly invisible during services due to ambient light from a large skylight directly above the viewing area. One screen was positioned under this bright skylight, while the other was in a more shaded area on a curved wall – creating inconsistent viewing experiences across the sanctuary.
For congregants, especially those with vision challenges, this meant struggling to see worship lyrics, sermon notes, announcements, and multimedia presentations that are essential to modern worship experiences. The church knew they needed a solution, but with so many LED display options and varying price points available, the decision felt overwhelming.
The Solution: Custom-Engineered Dual Video Wall System
After extensive research and consultation with MN LED Signs, Zion Lutheran Church chose to replace their problematic projector screens with two high-resolution LED video walls featuring 2.4mm pixel pitch SMD technology with high brightness capabilities (up to 4000 nits) and light sensors with separate controllers for each display to adjust to the different and constantly changing lighting conditions automatically.
Technical Innovation: This project had some interesting challenges from technical and structural standpoints:
- One display was located under a large skylight area, requiring exceptional brightness capability
- The other was positioned on a curved wall requiring custom mounting solutions
- Separate controllers were used, each with their own light sensors and high-brightness capability
- Each display measures approximately 10′ × 16′ – creating an impressive viewing experience
- Fiber optics were required because of the distance from the controllers to the displays
The Results?
Crystal-clear visibility from every angle in the sanctuary, regardless of natural lighting conditions. When the displays were first turned on, the impact exceeded even the church’s high expectations. The LED walls cut through ambient light effortlessly, delivering vibrant, clear images that are visible from anywhere in the worship space – even from adjacent rooms.
One particularly meaningful moment came when a legally blind congregational member approached the team after installation, expressing amazement that they could clearly see the screen content without their glasses from another room.
